Albert Wendt est né en 1939 (Samoa occidentales), il a également vécu à Fidji, en Nouvelle-Zélande et à Hawaii. Il est le premier titulaire de la chaire de « Pacific Studies » dans le département d’anglais de l’Université d’Auckland. Il a grandement contribué à l’émergence d’un renouveau culturel dans sa région du monde, notamment en promouvant les littératures du Pacifique Sud. |

- A reçu, en 2010, le Commonwealth Writer's Prize for the Asia Pacific Region
- En 1980, Prix Montana pour Leaves of the Banyan Tree (Les Feuilles du banian)
- En 2001, décoré Compagnon de l'Ordre de la Nouvelle-Zélande, en reconnaissance de ses services à la littérature.
